International Oriental Dance Festival 3-6 June 2004

YALLA! ENTHUSIASTICALLY EXPECTED - HAFLA MASREYA AS THE TOP EVENT SAT 5TH JUNE 2004

For the first time in Finland
Oriental dance, here best known as women's dance, will receive new depth as the male dancers of the top Egyptian dance group Mahmoud Reda Troupe will arrive for a guest performance in Finland. The Troupe has given performances in over a hundred countries, and will perform for the very first time in the Nordic countries, dancing together with the Masrah Dance Company in Helsinki. Hafla Masreya - Festival of Egyptian Dance and Music will take place at the Hall of Culture on Sat 5th June at 8 p. m.

Meeting of top Groups
The Hafla Masreya is the idea of Mr Mahmoud Reda, the grand old man of Egyptian dance. It is a great honour for the Finnish oriental dance that a Finnish dance group was especially asked to participate in this production with a distinguished group like the Mahmoud Reda Troupe. The atmosphere will be heightened by El Nugum, an orchestra from Cairo, who will be accompanying both the group dances and the solo performances by top Finnish dancers.

Mr Reda - a great friend of Finland
Mr Mahmoud Reda is highly honoured in the world of oriental dance. He is constantly touring all over the world and giving workshops in countries such as Japan, Argentina and Australia. Mr Reda has visited Finland several times, the first visit taking place during the Helsinki Olympic games in 1952 as a member of the Egyptian gymnastics team.

Enjoy the Finn's favourite orchestra
El Nugum (the Stars) made their first visit to Finland two years ago immediately conquering the hearts of oriental dance and music enthusiasts. The orchestra is conducted by the solo singer Mr Safaa Farid and we will also be privileged to listen to Mr Gamal Fouad's skilful playing of the nay-flute, Mr Reda Saad's emotional interpretation on the accordion and Mr Ashraf Barsoum's highly appreciated performance on the keyboard. As the pièce de résistance, we will witness Mr Sayyed Ibrahim's amazing skill with zills as well as his Tannoura, the traditional Whirling Dervish dance. Mr Ashraf Mousa, Mr Emad Sukkar and Mr Nasser Abdu will complete the orchestra with their strong percussion performance.

YALLA! INTERNATIONAL ORIENTAL DANCE FESTIVAL 3-6 JUNE 2004

Helsinki welcomes the summer with Yalla! International Oriental Dance Festival at the beginning of June 2004. Oriental dancers and dance lovers will be able to enjoy a full programme of excellent shows with both Egyptian and Finnish top dancers as well as an ample selection of workshops for all enthusiastic dancers.

Hafla Masreya
This time, most of our guests of honour are men. The incomparable Mahmoud Reda Troupe dancers will be visiting Finland for the first time, whereas the excellent El Nugum musicians have delighted us before. Both these groups will perform together with the Masrah Dance Company at Hafla Masreya - the Festival of Egyptian dance and Music. This climax of the Festival taking place in the Hall of Culture. We will also be honoured to welcome Mr Mahmoud Reda, the architect of this unique co-production, who is a dancer, choreographer and pioneer in the Egyptian dance and who will also be giving workshops during the Festival.

Live music and glorious dance
In addition to Hafla Masreya, El Nugum will also play at the Yalla! Opening party at the International Cultural Centre Caisa where even the audience will have the opportunity to dance to live music. The second night will bring us to the Savoy, where excellent dance groups and top solo dancers will fill the stage with energy, colour and splendour in the Grand Gala Show.

Enjoyable dance and music workshops
All the workshops will take place in the brand new House of Arts and its studios, where oriental dance and music lovers from Finland and abroad will assemble. Our guest teachers are Mmes Farida Fahmy and Raqia Hassan, both of whom are former dancers of Mr Reda's dance group and who currently are widely acclaimed dance teachers.

We offer over thirty workshops for professional dancers as well as amateurs and beginners. A singing workshop is a Yalla! novelty, where the El Nugum singer Safaa Farid will give instruction in singing technique. We also offer a special workshop for the physically disabled, as well as introductory workshops for men and children. There will also be workshops for stage make-up and costume embroidery.
